WINTER DRY SKIN CHECK UP

Signs of Winter Dry Skin?
The telltale symptoms of dry skin are easy to spot: skin just generally feels drier and tighter. Other signs may include roughness, itching, severe redness, flaking and scaling. Sometimes pores become less visible or skin may look dull. In severe cases, skin may crack and bleed, especially on the hands and fingertips.

What Happens in Winter Season?
Sun exposure or cold, dry air can cause skin to become dehydrated. Dry skin is more common in the winter because the air contains less humidity. It can also be genetic or hereditary, or a natural effect of aging.

What are The Options in hand?
Over the-counter lotions, such as Eucerin and Curél, can ease dryness and flaking. Or try a body cream that contains oil to aid seal in moisture. Look for fragrance-free products with alpha hydroxyl acids, which gently exfoliate to allow more water and moisture into the skin. Avoid antibacterial and deodorant soaps, which can be harsh and drying. Instead, use a gentle cleanser, such as Dove or Aveeno, or a mild shower gel with added moisturizers. Don't take extremely hot baths, or shower or soak in the tub for more than 10 minutes. Doing so breaks down your skin's natural protective oils, which keep it soft and smooth. Use a humidifier during the winter. Central heating and space heaters can dry out the air in your home. Choose natural, breathable fabrics, such as cotton and silk, for your bedding and innermost layer of clothing. Drink plenty of water and other liquids to keep skin hydrated from the inside out. Omega-3s (essential fatty acids found in foods such as salmon, walnuts, flaxseed, soybeans and broccoli) can also help keep skin supple.

When should you worry about?
See a dermatologist if dryness and itching keep you awake at night, if OTC lotions aren't working, if you have open sores or large areas of scaling or peeling skin, or if you develop an infection from scratching. You could have a more serious condition such as eczema, psoriasis or another skin disorder.


You should know 
 Although everyone's skin changes with age, a man's skin tends to stay moist longer. That's because a woman's skin becomes much drier after menopause. The best time to apply lotion is immediately after a shower or bath, when skin is still damp. Since dry skin is extra-sensitive, it's important protect it from the sun, especially if it's snowing (snow can reflect as much as 80 percent of the sun's rays). Apply SPF 15 or higher every day to your face, neck and ears.

HOW TO LOSE YOUR WEIGHT

If you have been trying to hard to reduce the weight but still left wonder how?  Here are some practical and simple tips; just practicing these sincerely for 20 days at a stretch is sure you start showing results and you start lose your weight in no time.

1. Take a paper and write down your weight loss goal – Most people do not do this, but believe me, it works. Whether you want to lose 10 kilos in 3 months, just reduce your belly or maybe just increase your energy levels, you can also write it all down in a weight loss diary or journal. The first step to reduce weight is to know and tell yourself how much you need to reduce. Here’s a beginner’s guide to weight loss at home in 30 days.

2. Walking is an ideal exercise for weight loss, burn more calories than you consume.  It’s a low-impact exercise, it may sound very simple but it does need some planning. To get an idea – a single hour of walking at a brisk pace of 5 km/h burns just 145 calories, whereas a single McVeggie Burger contains 465 calories. Calculate how much weight you can loose in a month.


3. Sugar is your Enemy replace your calorie laden latte with a Muscle Milk lite, one of my favorites, because it has zero sugar and a ton of protein This zero-calorie natural wonder is now available in almost all chain superstores.  It is also useful in lowering blood sugar and curbing diabetes. Another great trick is a sprinkle of cinnamon in your morning coffee or oatmeal- the spice has been shown to help stabilize blood sugar. It also slows the rate at which food exits the stomach, which helps you feel fuller longer.

4. It takes fat to burn fat. Like I said above, its sugar that gets you fit, not fat. Good fats include foods rich in Omega 3′s, like salmon, avocados & walnuts. These foods are full of nutrients that help keep you satiated throughout the day. Another great trick use brown rice instead of white – Not only does brown rice have fewer calories, it also has more fiber which makes you feel fuller for longer. Brown rice also retains the brain which helps lower cholesterol levels. Never starve to lose weight. If you go on a strict no-food or a reduced food diet, your body thinks you are starving and tries to save calories instead of burning them. Eat negative calorie foods which actually have very less calories.
5. Slowing down your breath. This is a very simple method that you can use even when you’re in the midst of doing something else. Whenever you notice you’re feeling tense and uptight check and see how you’re breathing. Most people under stress either alternate holding their breath with short breaths, or take rapid shallow breaths. After you become aware of your own breathing, consciously relax your belly and slow down the breathing. This works best if you focus on slowing down the exhalation rather than your inhalation. With each exhalation you can say to yourself “slow down”. That is all there is to it- Simple but surprisingly effective!!!

6. Alcohol is weight loss’s worst enemy – Not only does it add unnecessary calories because it is a drink and you do not realize how much you are consuming, it can also damage your exercise plans the morning after. So, stay away from alcohol or even mock tails with high sugar content. Fresh lime soda with no sugar or just plain lime juice is your best bet. Vegetable juices are also available in most places these days.

7. Whenever you feel hungry in between meals, drink water – Most of the time, when we ‘feel’ hungry, it is really just thirst and our body craving for something. Filling it up with water can help beat the hunger pangs.

8. Eat fruits and veggies 5 times a day – These are low-calorie wonder foods which also supply you with great nutrition. Eat a fruit in the morning before breakfast; eat a mid-morning fruit instead of snacking. Eat a big portion of fresh vegetable salad in the afternoon before you eat lunch. Have a fruit in the evening instead of snacking on fried food and oodles of coffee. And eat either a big bowl of vegetable soup, a quick stir-fry with very little oil or a salad in the evening.

9. Eat your dinner by 7:30 PM – We Indians are used to eating a heavy and late dinner. Since there is very less gap between your dinner and sleep time, the digestion is affected and can wreck your weight loss plans. Reduce your intake of salty food – We know you love pickles, pa pads and other salty snacks. But the salt is very bad for your weight loss plans as they can cause water retention and bloating. Stay away from them as much as possible.

10. Eat at home more often – We know this is very difficult and boring but you need to make up your mind for this. If you have a credit card, keep it under lock and key. Set yourself a withdrawal limit. Try cooking some of our health recipes. Not only do you learn new recipes, you also lose weight and are more conscious about what you eat. It is also a great idea to eat to your fill before you go out for parties, weddings.

11. Add more spices in your food – Spices have metabolism-increasing properties. Adding spices like pepper, chili, cumin, turmeric, mustard, etc not only increases the flavor, it also helps you reduce weight.

12. Reduce intake of red meat like mutton and beef – Stick to chicken instead. It contains lots of proteins and can fill you up for longer. If you are working out in the gym, it can be a great way to fuel up. Fish also is a healthier option as it has the good fats. It has lesser calories than chicken.

13. Workout in the morning – Before you get involved in the day-to-day humdrum, go for your workout or jog. It is a time when you are fresh and charged after a long night of sleep and is the best to workout. If getting up in the morning is a problem, try jogging machine – pack your gym bag or workout clothes and keep them near your bed. Record your own voice reminding you about your weight loss goal and set it as your alarm tone.

14. Eat a heavy breakfast – Most people end up skipping breakfast to lose weight. But this is the worst thing they could do. Traditional south Indian dishes like idlis, dosas, upma, etc. are great options. Avoid sweetened cornflakes and muesli. Here are some healthy breakfast recipes.

15. Exercise for at least 45 minutes a day – Studies have shown that this is the optimal time to exercise. Yoga, aerobics, weight training, swimming, zumba, Kettle bell, Cycling, Running, Tennis, Cross Fit, Jumping Rope, Pushups, TV Commercial Workout or any other form will do. But 45 minutes are is keys to weight loss. Include weight training in your regime. This will help build lean muscle, which in turn increase your metabolism and make your body a fat-burning machine.
16. Do not let exercise get monotonous. Do not go to the gym every single day. Join a dance or zumba class, go for a morning jog and try martial arts. Plan a Sunday swim with friends. Whatever works for you!

Easy Way to Prevent Kidney Stones

Do you know, one in ten people will have a kidney stone over the course of a lifetime? Recent studies have shown that kidney stone rates are on the rise across the world. Kidney Foundations have teamed up with Dr. Allan Jhagroo, a kidney stone specialist at the University of Wisconsin School of Medicine and Public Health, to help you stay stone-free by debunk some of the major kidney stone mythology and misconception.
Here are the kidney stone prevention tips for good health and wellness:
Saunas, hot yoga and heavy exercise may be good for your health and wellness, but they also may lead to kidney stones. Why? Loss of water through sweating - whether due to these actions or just the heat of summer leads to less urine production. The more you sweat, the less you urinate, which allows for stone-causing mineral deposits to settle and bond in the kidneys and urinary tract. Instead of hydrate with H2O, One of the best measures you can take to avoid kidney stones is to drink plenty of water, leading you to urinate a lot. So, be sure to keep well hydrated, especially when engaging in exercise or activities that cause a lot of sweating.
Oxa-what? Oxalate is naturally found in many foods, including fruits and vegetables, nuts and seeds, grains, legumes, and even chocolate and tea. Some examples of foods that contain high levels of oxalate include: peanuts, rhubarb, spinach, beets, chocolate and sweet potatoes. Moderating intake of these foods may be beneficial for people who form calcium oxalate stones, the leading type of kidney stones. A common misconception is that cutting the oxalate-rich foods in your diet alone will reduce the likelihood of forming calcium oxalate kidney stones. While in theory this might be true, this move toward isn't smart from an overall health standpoint. Most kidney stones are formed when oxalate binds to calcium while urine is produced by the kidneys. Instead to Eat and drink calcium and oxalate-rich foods together during a meal. In doing so, oxalate and calcium are more likely to bind to one another in the stomach and intestines before the kidneys begin processing, making it less likely that kidney stones will form.
Calcium is Not the Enemy, but it tends to get a bad rap! Most likely due to its name and composition, many are under the impression that calcium is the main perpetrator in calcium-oxalate stones. "I still see patients who wonder why they are getting recurring stones despite cutting down on their calcium intake," said Dr. Jhagroo. "I've even had patients say that their doctors told them to reduce their calcium intake." A diet low in calcium actually increases one's risk of developing kidney stones. Instead of don't decrease the calcium. Work to cut back on the sodium in your diet and to pair calcium-rich foods with oxalate-rich foods.
Fleeting a kidney stone is often described as one of the most hurting experiences a person can have, but sadly, it's not always a one-time event. Studies have shown that having even one stone greatly increases your chances of having another. "Most people will want to do anything they can to ensure it doesn't happen again," said Dr. Jhagroo. "Unfortunately, it doesn't seem to be the case that people make the changes they need to after their first stone occurrence." Research conducted by Dr. Jhagroo shows that those with kidney stones do not always heed the advice of their nephrologists and urinary specialists. About 15% of kidney stone patients didn't take prescribed medications and 41% did not follow the nutritional advice that would keep stones from recurring. Take action! Without the right medications and diet adjustments, stones can come back, and recurring kidney stones also could be an indicator of other problems, counting kidney disease.
Don’t fret and as the saying goes, "make lemonade." It's important to consider dietary remedies alongside remedy medications. While it may seem easier to just take a pill to fix a medical problem, consider what lifestyle changes will also make a big impact on your health. Next time you drive past a lemonade stand, consider your kidneys. Chronic kidney stones are often treated with potassium citrate, but studies have shown so as to limeade, lemonade and other fruits and juices high in natural citrate offers the same stone-preventing benefits. Beware of the sugar, though, because it can increase kidney stone risk. Instead, buy sugar-free lemonade, or make your own by mixing lime or lemon juice with water and using a sugar substitute if needed. "We believe that citrate in the urine may prevent the calcium from binding with other constituents that lead to stones," said Dr. Jhagroo. "Also, some evidence suggests that citrate may prevent crystals that are already present from binding with each other, thus preventing them from getting bigger."
In addition to calcium oxalate stones, another common type of kidney stones is uric acid stones. Red meat, organ meats, and shellfish have high concentrations of a natural chemical compound known as purines. "High purine intake leads to a higher production of uric acid and produces a larger acid load for the kidneys to excrete," said Dr. Jhagroo. Higher uric acid excretion leads to lower overall urine pH, which means the urine is more acidic. The high acid concentration of the urine makes it easier for uric acid stones to form. To prevent uric acid stones, cut down on high-purine foods such as red meat, organ meats, and shellfish, and follow a healthy diet that contains mostly vegetables and fruits, whole grains, and low fat dairy products. Limit sugar-sweetened foods and drinks, especially those that contain high fructose corn syrup. Limit alcohol because it can increase uric acid levels in the blood and avoid crash diets for the same reason..Eating less animal-based protein and eating more fruits and vegetables will help decrease urine acidity and this will help reduce the chance for stone formation.

Every person knows at least one lady with actually perfect skin. Each
time you see her shimmering look, you feel, seriously, how does she do it? What kind of magical procedures is she getting? Which expensive creams is she using? Here is the secret “she nailed the best daily routine”. I wrote here 15 routine that can be awesomely useful
for perfect skin.

1. Use the correct cleanser for correct skin.

"For oily or acne prone skin, a salicylic gel or benzyl peroxide wash works great," says Dr. Ava Shamban, a dermatologist in Santa Monica. "For dry mature skin, use either a moisturizing glycolic or milky cleanser. For skin with brown spots or miasma, use a brightening wash, such as an alpha hydroxyl acid cleanser."

2. Drink the right liquids.

Though it's tempting to grab a coffee the minute you wake up, Joanna Vargas, a skincare facialist in NYC, says choosing the right beverages can be a game changer. "Drink a shot of chlorophyll every morning to brighten, oxygenate, and hydrate your skin. Drinking chlorophyll also helps drain puffiness by stimulating the lymphatic system, so it's also good for cellulite." If you're not keen on downing a shot of the stuff, chlorophyll supplements can be found at many drugstores and health food stores. She also advised drinking green juices with lots of veggies in them: "It will transform your skin in a matter of days — and it helps oxygenate the skin and stimulates lymphatic drainage, so it's de-puffing, too."

3. Maintain a healthy diet.

"Your skin has a natural barrier to retain moisture, and essential to that is omega-3 fatty acid," Joanna Vargas advises. "Flax seeds on your salad or even walnuts will be an instant boost to your omega-3, thus increasing your skin's ability to hold onto moisture." And be sure to eat a diet low in foods with a high glycemic index (simple and complex carbohydrates).

4. Moisturize every day and night.

"The best times to moisturize are right after you get out of the shower and right before you goes to bed," explained Dr. Janet Prystowsky MD, and NYC-based dermatologist. Avoid lotions with heavy fragrances and be make sure you find a moisturizer gentle enough for every day use with zero irritation.

5. Fingers never touch the face.

Dr. Julia Tzu, an NYC-based dermatologist, says this is very important. It doesn't just spread bacteria and cause breakouts — it can lead to scarring, an increase in wrinkles, and even the flu.

6. Don’t use too many products.

Using more than one or two all at once is a big no-no, says Dr. Tzu. It can be harsh on the skin, resulting in more breakouts and clogged pores.

7. Wears sunscreen 365 days a year whether rain or shine.

"Many people feel they only need to protect themselves on sunny days or when visiting the beach," says Dr. Debbie Palmer, a New York dermatologist. "But the truth is that we need to protect our skin even when we're driving a car, flying in an airplane, or running errands. It's the daily UV exposure that contributes to the visible signs of aging." What kind of sunscreen is best? Choose a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or greater — and remember that it needs to be reapplied every 2 hours.

8. Hydrate in every way possible.

Every skin expert we spoke to emphasize the importance of hydration. "A lack of water means less radiance and more sag," says Dr. Mona Gohara, a dermatologist in Connecticut. She suggests choosing products (cleansing, moisturizing, and anti-aging) that have hydrating formulas. And, of course, drink around eight glasses of water a day.

9. Avoids direct heat exposure.

Don't just watch out for the sun — getting too close to heaters and fireplaces can also cause havoc on your skin. "It causes inflammation \and collagen stop working. I recommend staying at least ten feet away," explains Dr. Palmer. So next time you're roasting chestnuts or s'mores over an open fire, take a step back.

10. Exfoliate a couple of time per week.

"We lose 50 million skin cells a day, and without a little extra nudge, they may hang around leaving the skin looking sullen," says Dr. Gohara. To fight this, you should "choose a product that is pH neutral so it doesn't dry as it exfoliates." And don't just stop with your face — the skin on your body needs exfoliation, too.

11. Don’t eat just vitamins.

A balanced diet is important, but there's more than one way to give your skin vitamins. There are also topical antioxidants, which are serums and creams that contain ingredients that nourish the skin. "These can really help to repair the skin from sun damage and they also have natural sunscreen properties," says Dr. Palmer. Not sure how to use them? The best time to apply them is right after cleansing, or they can be layered under your sunscreen for added protection.

12. Clean your makeup brushes regularly.

To fight infection and clogged pores, Dr. Prystowsky recommends washing concealed and foundation brushes once a week. For brushes you use around your eyes, she recommends twice per month, and for any other brushes, once a month is fine. Here's how: Put a drop of a mild shampoo into the palm of your hand. Wet the bristles with lukewarm water. Then, massage the bristles into your palm to distribute the shampoo into the brush. Avoid getting the metal part of the brush wet/or the base of the brush hairs because the glue could soften and the bristles could fall out. Rinse the shampoo out and squeeze out the water with a towel. Lay the brushes on their side with the bristles hanging off the edge of the counter to dry.

13. Protection doesn't stop at sunscreen.

We are talking SPF makeup, sunglasses, and broad-brimmed hats. "Preventing sun damage is a million times better for your skin than treating it after the fact," says Dr. Prystowsky.

14. Skincare routine is easy to follow.

"Fad products and fancy ingredients are fun to try, and sometimes they work well," says Dr. Prystowsky, "but usually they are off the shelves just as quickly as they are on them." Find a cleanser and moisturizer that you know work for you, and keep them at the core of your routine.

15. Sleep well.

It's not just about getting eight hours a night. Skin will also benefit from regularly using clean silk pillowcases. "The material glides easily and prevents creasing and wrinkles,” says Jesleen Ahluwalia, M.D., a dermatologist from Spring Street Dermatology in New York City. "Silk is also easier on hair — it helps avoid tangles and breakage." Better hair and skin while you sleep? Yes, please.
